Hawaii Driver's Practice Test 2026 – Complete Exam Prep

The best action when approaching a vehicle that has just stopped in a parked position is to assume that the driver will open the door as you approach. This mindset is important for your safety and the safety of others. Many drivers may not check their surroundings thoroughly before opening their doors, which can lead to sudden and unexpected obstacles in your path. By anticipating that the driver might open the door, you remain vigilant and can prepare to slow down or maneuver your vehicle if necessary. This defensive driving technique helps in avoiding potential accidents and ensures that you are aware of your environment.

Other options do not promote safety. For instance, speeding up could reduce reaction time and increase the risk of a collision. Slamming on the brakes can lead to loss of control of the vehicle and may also pose a danger to others on the road. Assuming the driver will wait can create a false sense of security, as many drivers may not be attentive to their surroundings before opening the door. Thus, the cautious approach of assuming the door might be opened is the most prudent action.
